Dean & Britta at Chicago MCA

newsimage01.jpg If you’re a fan of Luna, the dream/indie pop band who made 7 studio albums and played their final shows in February 2005 — or if you’re more familiar with Dean and Britta in other projects (Dean fronted Galaxie 500, and Britta was the voice of cartoon character Jem to name only a couple prior accolades), you’ll be excited to learn that this dynamic duo is at the MCA on Saturday, March 8th, performing 13 Most Beautiful… Songs from Andy Warhol’s ‘Screen Tests’.

Their current project was commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.  The Screen Tests are silent film portraits that Andy Warhol shot at the Factory between 1964 and 1966. The subjects – both famous and anonymous – were visitors to Warhol’s studio. (more…)

Gino De Dominicis At P.S.1

2760655052_9dc369be17.jpg Gino De Dominicis is likely an artist you may not be familiar with. This is for good reason.  He spent most of his life avoiding contact with the art world and is widely viewed as an illusive and mysterious artist.  If you’ve heard of him, you know he’s quite an interesting story.  The Rome based artist was some what of a cult figure in European art circles and know for his eccentricities. The myth’s about the artists biography are especially interesting concerning his reported death in 1998.  (more…)

Jay Ryan artist profile

f03ea4_fullsize.jpg Jay Ryan is a friend of Culture Clod just for the sake of disclosure, however, if we’d never met him, he’d still be gracing our pages.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with Jay, you can find out the usual basic info on his website, The Bird Machine.   Jay has been a staple in the independent music scene for years making posters for such seminal bands as Hum, Wilco, Andrew Bird, supersuckers, sebadoh, low, sterolab, jon spencer, seam, shellac, fugazi, the jesus lizard, neko case, sonic youth, interpol, queens of the stoneage and many many more.  If you’ve played in a band in the mid-west and haven’t seen one of Jay’s posters, then you haven’t been looking.  His client list of bands is impressive, as is the unique art work he produces for each of them. Eric Fischl new works at Baldwin Gallery

New works by Eric Fischl  always get my attention. He’s  an amazing artist, and it’s been fun to watch his  style develop over the years. He’s a painters’ painter, and these new works are no exception.  His oil paintings are wonderful constructions that use a painterly method to deliver a sense of psychological realism that pervades his work.  He is at once painterly and  precise – a hard combination to master, yet one with which Fischl seems completely at home.
